The Strategic Impact of Water on Leadership

I was struck today by a LinkedIn post from Steve Gladis that reminded me of something I’ve long felt intuitively: water has a profound effect on how we lead, think, and connect. As someone who finds deep inspiration and calm near the ocean, I’ve often wondered why water seems to unlock clarity, creativity, and resilience.

Gladis highlights: Wallace J. Nichols explores this beautifully in his book Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do. He introduces the concept of Blue Mind – a calm, meditative, and focused state triggered by proximity to water. It’s a powerful contrast to Red Mind, the overstimulated, anxious state that many leaders operate in daily.

From a strategic perspective, this insight opens up new possibilities:

  • Leadership development: Imagine integrating water-based environments into executive retreats or coaching sessions to foster deeper reflection and breakthrough thinking.
  • Workplace design: Offices with water features—fountains, aquariums, or even ambient water sounds—can reduce stress and improve receptivity.
  • Event planning: It’s no coincidence that many high-level leadership conferences take place in San Diego or Scottsdale, often at resorts with abundant water elements.
  • Healthcare and wellness: Even medical offices often include water features to ease anxiety and promote calm.

Personally, I return from the beach feeling renewed—more grounded, more open, and more capable. And I’ve noticed that others feel the same. Water doesn’t just soothe; it transforms.

The Blue Mind author Nichols highlights how water immersion—or even viewing images of water—triggers the release of powerful neurochemicals: serotonin, oxytocin, and dopamine. These “happy neural opiates” generate feelings of joy, calmness, trust, and a sense of belonging.

If this resonates with you—whether you’re designing leadership programs, rethinking your workspace, or simply seeking new ways to inspire your team—I’d love to explore how we can integrate this into your strategy. At GA PR, we’re always looking for ways to elevate leadership through thoughtful, human-centered approaches.

Let’s talk.

Note: (my pic:-) The wrinkles whisper their stories—I don’t deny they speak.
Still, I place my faith in blue, hoping it softens what time dares to streak.
